To actualize the vision of the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo CFR to turn Anambra into a Clean, Green, and Sustainable homeland, the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim has reassured waste management contractors that they are partners in the bid to realize this very important vision of the governor.
Dr. Ibezim while speaking during an interactive session with select Transition Committee Chairpersons, and the contractors, at the Government House Awka, on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, appealed to them to add vigor to their efforts in ensuring that the state is free of refuse, stating that the Governor just last week flagged off a massive drainage desilting which include waste evacuation and management, as part of the clean green and sustainable Anambra state project.
He declared that "We are continuing desilting and we are not stopping until everywhere in Anaambra is clean. We are embarking on massive waste evacuation and while we are still injecting funds into waste management, the plan is to get private sectors involved at a stage in the process."
He thanked them for their patience and sacrifice while assuring them that their demands will be met by the Governor, warning that incompetent contractors will be removed from the system.
While airing their opinions, contractors from Onitsha South complained about the cost of diesel and irresponsible dumping of refuse by residents as some of the challenges hindering efficient service delivery while appealing for prompt payment and enforcement of existing laws on indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
On their parts, the TC Chairperson of Njikoka Hon. Clement Aguiyi, alongside a contractor from the LGA, suggested that Anambra should transit from waste conveying to proper waste management, where waste is sorted, recycled, and put back into use in the society, they, therefore appealed to the state government to provide land for sorting of waste in the council area.
