By Vincent O Ezechukwu

The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo CFR, in his intention to make Anambra the cleanest state in Nigeria, has solicited the cooperation of market leaders and the leadership of the Youth Wing of Anambra State Association of Town Unions in the sustainable waste management program, which is going to be flagged-off on Friday, 31 March 2023.

The State Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, while addressing the leadership of the associations on behalf of the state Governor, at Government House, Awka on Wednesday, 29 March, 2023 reminded them of the situation this administration met on the ground when refuse took over the streets and in places like Ochanja roundabout, refuse the height of two-story building took over the roads which the new administration took head on to bring the situation under control.

Dr. Ibezim decried the incessant building of lockup shops in places designated as car parks in the market and the habit of trading on top of the drainage, thereby blocking water channels, resulting in flooding and  environmental hazard across the state, regretting the blocking of Nwangele water channel near  Ochanja market Onitsha with refuse.

While soliciting their cooperation, he charged the opinion leaders to formulate modalities that can work in their various markets and communities to assist the state government in its effort to achieve a clean, green, healthy, and sustainable Anambra state.

Promising that the cleanest market will be part of decision-making in the sustainable waste management initiative that will be replicated across the state.

In his contribution, the Chief of staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajuhi appealed to the market leaders to assist the state government in areas of revenue collection, insisting that government can not do it alone, considering the major infrastructural projects ongoing in the state and the need to keep their areas of jurisdiction clean.
