World Environment Day: Anambra Targets Plastic Waste-Free Environment

In commemoration of the 2023 World Environment Day, the Anambra state government, through the Ministry of Environment, has set machinery in motion to achieve a plastic waste-free environment across the 21 local government areas in the state.
Addressing members of the press in his office, on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, the state's Commissioner for Environment, Engr Felix Odumegwu Ph.D. stated that, in line with this year's World Environment Day's Theme which focuses on Solutions to Plastic Pollution with the #BeatPlasticPullution, the state government through his ministry in collaboration with Anambra Waste Recyclers Association is set to hold the maiden edition of all the Anambra Community Plastic Waste Recovery challenges.
Engr Odumegwu added that this is also his ministry's effort to actualize the vision of the Executive Governor of Anambra State Prof. Chukwuma Soludo CFR. in maintaining a clean, green, and sustainable environment.
He noted further that the Community Plastic Waste Recovery initiative is to add value to plastic waste, this he explained that all the 179 communities in the state have been categorized into urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, and will participate in the plastic waste collection challenge in each of the communities, announcing a reward of one million Naira cash prize in each of the categories for the communities that collected the highest number of plastic waste.
Declaring that in partnership with Chikason Group Nnewi, there will also be a Recycle Bank in the state where households can exchange their plastic waste for money to encourage responsible behavior towards plastic waste disposal in our society.
Finally, Mr. Commissioner announced what he called a circular economy with 5Rs of Environmental waste management sustainability, which he said can be achieved through the 5Rs; Refuse: Reduce: Reuse: Repurpose, and Recycle, he assures that these can offer improvement to the environment in waste management sustainability.
