NACA Inaugrates IBBSS Technical Team in Anambra State

The National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, inaugurated the Anambra State Technical Team to carry out a survey on the Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Study, (IBBSS) in Anambra State with the goal of achieving epidemic control in the State.
Inaugurating the team during the 2026 IBBSS Entry Meeting, held at Anambra State AIDS Control Agency's office old Government House Awka, the Director General of NACA Dr. Tope Ilori, represented by the Principal Programme Officer of NACA Mrs Joy Egwuonwu urged the technical team that will be led by the Executive Director of ANSACA Dr. Nkem Okeke, to carry out data based survey to identify people living with HIV/AIDS through testing and provision of Antiretroviral drugs and other assistance with the aim of achieving viral suppression in the State.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Executive Director of ANSACA and the head of the technical team, Dr. Nkem Okeke, noted that the team is in Anambra for the Nationally coordinated survey on IBBSS concerning HIV, a programme targeted at prevention and control of HIV in the State, explaining that the survey is critical for Anambra State and will cover key population, including sex workers and men having sex with men. While noting that due to high prevalence of HIV in the State, Anambra State was chosen alongside other eleven States in the country.
Dr. Okeke assured that the Governor of Anambra State Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has provided the enabling environment and every technical support that will enable the team carry-out hitch free survey to identify and bring down number of cases in the State.
He indicated that, 1200 individuals will be tested during the programme in Anambra State. The newly appointed ED appreciated the Federal Ministry of Health and NACA for the choice of Anambra State among the States selected for the IBBSS programme.
In his presentation, the Acting Chief Executive Officer, West African Centre for Public Health and Development, Mr. Chukwuemeka Ejekam, noted that, the centre is implementer of the 2026 IBBSS, which is targeted at key population with the aim of bringing down HIV cases and attaining epidemic control by 2030 as set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
He stated that the testing in Anambra State will be carried out with new kits capable of identifying and confirming new infection within two weeks, unlike the older test kits that take up to six months to identify new infection, assuring that the centre will give the State all necessary support to carry-out new programme-intelligence that will be based on data evidence for HIV/AIDS response in the State.
