- as  Deputy Governor Ibezim Meets with their representatives

To resolve the revenue impasse with transporters in Anambra State, the state Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu  Ibezim, on Sunday, September 25, 2022, led the delegation from the Anambra State Government in a meeting with representatives of the agitating transporters in the State.

The meeting which was held at the Revenue House Awka, was a sequel to the Saturday address to the transporters by Dr Ibezim, at Ekwueme Square Awka, among other things doused tension among the protesting drivers comprising of Keke operators, shuttle drivers, tippers and inter-state transporters in the state.

Addressing the driver's representatives, in the fruitful dialogue, the state Deputy Governor warned against violent conduct by the drivers, emphasizing that the government reserves the right to prosecute lawbreakers who have become a nuisance to the law-abiding Ndi Anambra.

Mr Deputy Governor, however, assured the drivers that the government of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has a human face and is ready to dialogue to find a solution to the impasse which had crippled public transportation in the state in the past week, hence this meeting with the drivers.

Furthermore, the Deputy Governor noted that the state government will henceforth review the activities of transport unions across the state, following their hide and seek attitude while the protest which led to the blocking of major roads across the state lasted, he stated thus " we will review the activities of the transport unions across the state, we can't tolerate what we went through with them while trying to negotiate with the transporters during the protest."

Moving forward, the state government delegation assured the transporters during the meeting to resolve their problem and to look into the request of each of the transport units who presented different payment schedules that will soothe their units; which range from monthly, weekly and daily payments.

In their various reactions, Peter Onyemaife representing shuttle drivers assured them that his unit will support the state government in their effort to end the disagreement between them, he, however, appealed for a reduction of the monthly payment imposed on them, pleading that they convey students to and from school at a reduced rate.

Uchenna Umeh who spoke on behalf of Keke operators thanked the state government for allowing them to air their grievances while pleading for a reduction of their levy as most of them are on"hire purchase" arrangements.

Other members of the government delegation include the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Ernest  Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Transport, Barr (Mrs) Patricia Ifeoma IGWEBUIKE,

MD/Director, Anambra Internal Revenue Services (AIRS) Richard Madiebo, Special Adviser on Security, Rtd AVM Ben Chiobi, MD ATMA Okonkwo Konti Komplete Emeka
