Ibezim Leads United Nations Delegation to Oko Erosion Sites, Ogbaru Holding Centers, Seeks Collaborations

The Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, has described environment as the major pillar of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo's administration, disclosing that combination of factors are responsible for the environmental challenges confronting the state, which the administration is tackling head-on.
Dr Ibezim made this submission at Oko, Orumba North LGA, on Saturday, October 29, 2022 as he narrates the environmental challenges facing the state to the United Nations delegation whom he led to on-the spot assessment of Oko erosion sites and the recent landslide which saw many buildings and economic trees cave in some weeks ago.
Mr. Deputy Governor, appealed to International Community, Federal Government and Indigenes of the area to do all they can to assist the state to mitigate environmental challenges threatening it, which according to him, are gully erosion, landslide and the recent flooding in parts of state.
He noted that a combination of factors, including but not limited to climate change, human activities and natural causes are some of the identifiable factors responsible for the devastation, warning that human activities like sand dredging, improper channeling of storm water will no longer be tolerated.
Recalled that the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed & Climate Change Agency's Project Coordinator/MD, Prof. Philip Phil-Eze raised alarm about the landslide at Oko on Thursday, October 19, 2022 prompting the state government to take proactive action, by visiting the site.
Later at Ogbaru, Mr Deputy Governor, while guiding the United Nations' team led by its Residents Humanitarian Coordinator to Nigeria, Mr. Matthias Schmale, to Holding Centers for flood victims, farm lands and flood damaged culvert, explained that the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, is touched by the suffering of Ndi Anambra hence he ordered for the assessment tour.
Assuring that the government as part of post flood rehabilitation exercise, will ensure that palliative measures are deployed to rehabilitate roads in the area, and proper resettlement of victims who will soon return to their homes as the flood recedes.
Others joining on the tour include, the Chief of staff to the Governor, Mr Earnest Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Environment, Mr Felix Odumegwu, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr Ugochukwu Obiefuna , TC Chairman of Orumba North, Ugochukwu Ekwueme, and his Ogbaru counterpart, amongst others.
