ANTI-TOUTING: “SASA” is operating in a different way

By Izuchukwu Adichie

I recall one of the past administrations how an anti-touting squad whose job was to ensure zero touting in Onitsha and its environs turned themselves into defacto government, parks and market managers, and government revenue agents, making a return of N300- N400 million naira monthly to the state purse as an IGR. There was no government to evaluate their activities, they left their core mandate, patriotism, civility, and humanity in the discharge of their responsibilities and became touts, nuisance, and kidnappers. They are part of the problems Onitsha Metropolitan is still facing!

The coming of Soludo had brought something different and with the formal inauguration of the Special Anti-Touting Squad -SASA to ensure a true zero touting, gone are the days in Anambra state when a Governor would launch an anti-touting squad without proper recruitment and adequate training, equipping, cautioning, and advising the members to toe the path of civility, decorum, rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights and without monitoring the duties to ensure that the team operates in tandem with its mandate. SASA is operating in a different way including 24/7 operations which was never obtainable in the past.
