SOLUDO AND THE PROPOSED "10-STOREY INTERNATIONAL HOTEL IN AWKA

The recent breaking of news of a proposed "10-storey international hotel in Awka" set to be built by Soludo's administration by one of our friends has generated a lot of debate, while some are questioning its priority, others maintain that it is a necessary and crucial undertaking. Building a modern international city requires strategic planning and infrastructure development to attract international investors. Such developments typically include an airport or seaport, as well as hotels of international standard to accommodate visitors. Without these facilities, it would be difficult to attract foreign investment, which is essential for economic growth and development.

The success stories of cities like Abuja, Dubai, Singapore, and Rwanda attest to the importance of international hotels and airports in attracting foreign investment. For instance, the Hilton Hotel played a crucial role in the development of Abuja, while Dubai's rapid transformation was spurred by the construction of good airports and international hotels. Egypt is building a new Cairo but first a 500-room Marriott hotel. Similarly, Rwanda's investment in international hotels has helped to create wealth and attract tourists to the country.

In the Eastern region of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dr. M. I. Okpara recognized the importance of the Hotel Presidential in Enugu, Port Harcourt, and Calabar as necessary for the economic growth and development of the region. Jim Nwobodo also built Ikenga hotels in Enugu, Nsukka, Awka, and Abakiliki in the early 1980s. Sam Mbakwe's decision to construct the Imo airport and Concorde Hotel in Owerri was initially met with resistance, but today, the infrastructure has become a driving force in the development of Imo state.

In this light, Soludo has embarked on a mission to transform Anambra State into a truly international city. His efforts include restoring security, law and order, and rebuilding transport infrastructure, including the construction of over 450 km of roads, developing a rail master plan, and ensuring pothole-free roads. He has also empowered thousands of youths, provided free education and healthcare for pregnant women, and created job opportunities for over 10,000 youths, including teachers, medical professionals, and security officers. Additionally, he is building a new industrial city, regenerating cities, constructing Awka Fun City, and revamping public water schemes, among others.

To attract serious investors and take Anambra state to the next level of development, Soludo has designed a new Awka (Awka 2.0) and a new Onitsha (Onitsha 2.0) using international templates for leapfrogging the transformation of society. However, the absence of an international hotel has been a significant hindrance to attracting serious foreign investment to the state in the past even with Anambra's potential. Therefore, the proposed "10-storey international hotel in Awka" is a crucial part of Soludo's plan to make Anambra a truly international city that can host the world.
