 Unizik's Mass Communication Department Hosts Groundbreaking Career Seminar

Stakeholders and practitioners in the communication sector have applauded the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, for organizing  maiden edition of Career Development Seminar, which was held at the ASUU Secretariat of the citadel on Thursday, April 25, 2024.


The keynote speaker, Dr. Valentine Obienye, the Special Adviser on Media to Mr. Peter Obi, spoke on the theme of the seminar, "Exploring Career Opportunities in the Unbundled Mass Communication Curriculum." He began by narrating the history of communication, from the Athenians and Persians to the present day, while interjecting his personal experience as an undergraduate at the University of Lagos and his journey towards becoming a recognized personality in journalism and public relations. Obienye urged the elated students to maintain focus at all times in order to achieve success.


The lead presenter, Prof. Chinyere Okunna, gave applause and commendations for the head of the department, Dr. Chioma Agbasimelo, for organizing the seminar, which aims to inspire upcoming communicators on their career path after leaving the university. She urged the HOD to oversee the successful unbundling of Mass Communication into the newly introduced Nine distinct departments. She further challenged the students to identify their areas of strength and weakness, applying the SWOT model, to identify opportunities and be ready to eliminate threats when they arise.

This was while outlining the dynamics between the town and gown, which formed the purpose of the seminar.


The seminar, chaired by Prof. Chinwe Uzochukwu, featured a session that brought together achievers in the industry and students of the department in a mentorship session on career paths to specialize in after graduation.
